Guo Gu Q&A

Guo Gu addressed questions at London Chan Meditation on 19th October 2024:
1) Info: a small sitting group in Germany, contact person – Sijia (00:01:20)
2) How to deal with when “a sensor of rest overrides a sense of practice/responsibility”? When there is Dhamar practice, you don’t have to worry about food or shelter. Dharma will carry you! (00:05:00)
3) Translation of Hongzhi Zhengjue’s passage from Chinese: What is Awakening Like? (00:11:43)
4) How to understand Guogu’s article “What Is Harmful? What Is Helpful?” (01:03:30)

#### Hongzhi Zhengjue’s passage ####
To arrive at this great rest and great cessation, as mold grows around your mouth and the grass sprouts on your tongue, everything is directly and thoroughly let go of. Wash [away your attachments] until it is clean and pure, polish [your mind] until it is bright and clear. Like the autumn scenery reflected in a lake, or like the moon imprinted in the sky—utterly clear, transparent. You must know that there is a path of self-transformation.  If you’re able to pivot around [to directly and thoroughly let go], then you would not distinguish right from wrong; precisely where your mind is unable to distinguish right from wrong is where you cannot be confused.
This is the opportunity for you to penetrate the very peak and the very bottom of things—where you have exhausted [vexations to their] roots, reaching to source [of awakening]. The myriad sages have no other pathway than this. The wonder lies in the backward journey; it is like borrowing a path to plant your feet. In brightness there is darkness; in function, there is no trace. On the tips of a hundred grasses, in the noisy market, floating and lifting the body, as you freely stride with dignity. Naturally riding on sounds and mounting on forms, you transcend hearing and sight. It is in this way that you must merge with [the way]. Such is the matter of the patch robed monks.
